Newton Historic Mid-Century Renovation

The renovation of a mid-century home in Newton captures the spirit of the era, including heated floors, original wood cabinetry and paneling, and walls of windows. A thoughtful renovation preserved these elements but updated the home for today’s living.

A kitchen and casual dining addition expanded the view and access to outdoor living areas while also expanding the space for laundry and a mudroom. Heated and polished concrete floors in the addition continued to the first and lower levels where carpets and vinyl were removed to reveal and celebrate the restored and polished concrete. Original doors were re-used in the addition and an interior window at the kitchen counter lets natural light flow through the space, but it is also similar to one in the home’s original living area. A custom wooden built-in banquette and modern lighting takes this home into the next century.

Bathrooms also received much-needed updates but clever storage and materials consistent with the mid-century aesthetic of the home meant echoing the original. The master bath features limestone tile, custom vanity, and plenty of storage. The curbless shower has a linear drain that complements the grain of the tile and wood.

An upstairs nook becomes the perfect place for a desk, featured in The Boston Globe.
